View Full Version : Baffled oil pan for KA

No real good section to put this, so I am NA, so I'll put it here. My first, and only, track event in my S14 I noticed something that disturbed me. A severe drop in oil pressure (~20 psi) on right hand turns. Overfilling the sump by 1 quart helped alot but it still concerns me. I have yet to find a company making a baffled oil pan for a KA, so I have thought about doing it myself. I have a welder and I know its not rocket science but has anyone up here fabbed one up? Thanks! I've actually been thinking about modifying a stock pan. What I'd like to do is section the pan like the SR and possibly run the Greddy lower section, but still haven't bothered to check the pickup locations. It shouldn't be too costly to have a flange made and welded to the stock pan to do something like this, I think. I'm wondering if a crank scraper and windage tray would help out with oiling, though. I was looking into a www.crank-scrapers.com setup. http://www.crank-scrapers.com/install3si.jpg

I have been watching that thread as well. I have talked with Kevin before and their stuff is top notch. I may shoot him an email and ask.

Monty ran Ishihara stuff on his SR and has nothing but good things to say from what I heard.

Xcessive now has a cast aluminum oil pain for the KA that allows you to bolt on an SR20 lower sump.

$335 for that + $350-400 for a GReddy pan, and you aren't getting too far from a dry sump setup w/a used pump, IIRC.

Has anyone ever seen a non-ghetto dry sump setup on a KA for under $1000?
New ARE oil pans are $400. Even if you get used the plumbing, reservoirs, pumps, oil cooler, remote filter, custom brackets would cost more than $600 wouldn't it?

I have a dry sump system on my 3 valve KA racing motor. Pan and pump are from Gary Armstrong at ARE, tank is Moroso. It works quite well.
However, I raced a 240Z for five years with a stock oil pump and a Nissan Motorsports pan. It had kickouts for extra oil, windage tray and trap doors. It worked fine.
If I had a combo street/track car I would call Gary at ARE and see what he could do to modify a OEM pan and keep the wet sump. Gary has bent over backwards to help me with some serious oiling problems. Will it be cheap? I just don't know.
One other source is Joe Harlan at Top Tech Motorsports in Oregon City, Oregon. I don't know him personally but we e-mailed a few times and I believe he told me he was racing on the stock S13 3 valve oiling system with a modified pan.

Joe is a great asset to have, of course...it doesn't hurt that he's local.=)

there was a thread on ka-t.org, about one of the member's being in contact with moroso about getting a ka24 pan made with a bigger sump capacity, but anything goes with this sort of hearsay. i'd say it's possible since moroso just came out with their sr20 pan, but time span is another thing.

I made my own.

Worked well. It was baffled and I put in crank scrapers and windage tray.
Some might think it is ghetto, but it was fine for a race car and I think it only ended up costing me a couple hundred bucks. It held around 7 quarts.

That's the only picture I have of the pan. I recently sold the motor.
But in short, go buy a 40$ chevy claimer pan kit from a circle track supply store. In it you get some baffles, and an oil plug, as well as some sheet metal to use. You will have to do some cutting, fitting, modifying, but it's doable. Find/pay some one to weld it up.
We cut out the existing baffles in the stock pan, and once we had the new sheet metal in place, welded the stock baffles back in.
It takes some fabricating, but you don't have to spend a grand to get that, just some time and sweat equity.
But you won't be able to use your AC compressoer with this set up, so keep that in mind.

i saw the "build it yourself kits" and figured that may have been what you used. I may look into this later, just wondered if you had any more detail on that motor.
Who still runs A/C on their track car anyway?

I wish I'd have had AC yesterday!! Maaaaan it was hot out there. exhaust was so hot on my car it melted the heel of my driving shoes. no carpet + exhaust heat = one sweaty driver!!

I had the same problem on my 240sx race car. I started to wear a heal protector. It straps on over your racing shoe. It helps a lot. When they bumped the min. weight on the car, I put in a cool suit. That is the best investment that I have ever made. Made racing in August in the southeast very bearable. I highly recommend them.

If you still have a CAT make sure to install a test pipe before lapping days.
That will help with the head buildup under the floorboard.
That and add some good insulation.

Anyone know if an Altima oil pan will fit the RWD KA24DE block?

If so, that would be a good start.

Just as a follow up I can confirm that the Altima DE pan doesn't fit the 240sx DE block. I bought one really cheap ($8) off of Fleabay to compare. Anyone need an Altima upper oil pan really cheap? :o
