Did you reuse the diff bearings that came with the diff?
I know I should buy new ones but just curious :)
I used the ones that came on my S15 diff, but I'd say you're fine, and it's probably preferable if you're going to reuse the old races.

I reused mine as well. I've never replaced a diff bearing and never had any issues either.

There are some good threads out there about what's needed and how to install. Pretty simple, really.
How much do they go for now? Seems like they've had the JDM tax for a long time, a few years at least.

$400 +$75-$100 shipping is what I have found.
That puts it just slightly higher than the OBX diff.

I got S15 diff for $450 shipped or so. Plus I sprung for the solid gold Nismo bolts. The S15 diffs were $800 or so back in 2004 when I first started reading about non-clutch-type diffs. If you've got more than that burning a hole in your pocket (Dave Coleman) a Quaife Helical will set you back $1100+.

I sniped mine on ebay for $208 + ship :) -- granted shipping was $140, but still a deal.
And I reused the bearings as well.

Yep, I got a badass deal for mine back in '04 for like $500 shipped with output shafts from Japan. They're actually cheaper now than back then, so I definitely recommend it.
Screw OBX, get an OEM part for just a little bit more.

I think the prices dropped (from $600ish to $400ish) right about the same time that OBX released their model. At least they are good for something.

Yeah, I thought about the OBX for about 3 seconds. I think this is a case where OEM FTMFW!!!

I want to get one... what do I need for my s13... I am clueless.. All the talk of output shafts/rings/etc.. confused me what is actually needed and what should one get to get it installed into an s13...
I also know that SPL recently released special bushings that allow the complete installation of the 300zx/j30/s15 pumpkins no issue... but i still dont have practical answers what to buy lol...

I am worried buying this stuff on ebay as so many ppl sell that knock off **** and badge it and market it as an s15 hlsd...

I almost bought the 2nd one but the 4-8 week shipping killed it for me.
This is one I won early this week:

I should have it in 10-14 days, the guy has sold a bunch of them, so he may have more. I'd keep an eye out.

I can't find who I bought mine from as it's not in the ebay record anymore, but it was a little over a year ago, cost like $450 shipped, and I had no issues with it at all.

I bought from Tom_Stylus (a_ahmed's 2nd ebay link) from Japan and had him ship the diff to my JDM mother-in-law's house. I picked it up last April when I was on a family trip over there... I got some dirty looks from the wife, but it was well worth it. I paid something like $440 when all was said and done.

I got mine from A_ahmed's first ebay link. That's the guy in Texas that I was talking about. I got a little better deal, but when I bought, they had all but fallen off the radar. This is supposed to be the guy that unlocked the mystery of the output shafts, and told Jspec that L and R sides are different.

ya my wife gives me dirty looks with my recent car purchases lol... 200$ EMS shipping yikes...
I hope the purchase is worth it (as in good condition, as in working perfect, as in can take the abuse and as in i got all thats needed lol)
Yea I just got mine from Tom_Style and it was like 475 shipped w/ the output shafts. Shipping was supposed to take 4-8 weeks and it was at my door in 5 weeks.
Also the seller kept contact the whole time..great seller.
Also do you guys use the gasket or RTV when sealing up the diff after installation?
Gearhead_42
05-03-2008, 03:18 PM
I used RTV when installing mine... no leaks in 2+ years
McCoy
05-03-2008, 03:50 PM
I also used RTV (grey) and have had no issues with leaks...
Epstein
05-03-2008, 04:27 PM
I've done a dozen diffs with grey or black RTV. No leaks ever.
Grey RTV here - no leaks from the flange.
My drain plug is weeping a bit, and it's seriously stuck now. I tried to change the fluid a while back and I lifted the back of my car off the jackstands with a 24" breaker bar trying to get it loose. Bleh

I always have to use my electric impact to get it out.

I installed one of these for a buddy.
http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z248/umaikakudo/S15HelicalDiff/
He actually bought it from the eBay seller mx83*gx81. It came in great condition and he really liked how it worked. I drift too much and want my diff to work under ALL conditions, especially in the snow, so I stick with clutch diffs.
To swap the diff Download a FSM from PhatG20 and follow the procedure: http://www.phatg20.net.
In order to get the Ring gear bolts off you will want an impact wrench or at least a really large 1/2" breaker bar and a really good bench vice. The bolts have some heavy duty threadlocker that make it a PITA to remove without an impact gun.
To re-install the ring gear you'll need a good bench vice solidly mounted, 1/2" torque wrench (Need 80 Ft./Lbs. if I remember correctly), and Loc-Tite red for the bolts.
You'll want to get a dial caliper like this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DD0VA/ref=pd_cp_hi_1/104-2702087-1623938?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=0GZP63JFVEM61Z1XV9EV&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=277661601&pf_rd_i=B0000DD4GB
to make sure your runout and backlash are within spec.
You'll also want to get some of the special gear tooth engagement grease stuff that you apply to the ring gear to ensure that the teeth are engaging properly (procedure explained in the FSM and product available at most part stores)
Once you get it back in you'll if the gears whine while driving you'll want to stop driving and fix the pinion depth/alignment issue ASAP. This is never required (as long as you keep the same R+P gears) as everyone just slaps in a new diff and doesn't have any issues. If you're road racing it will pay to take every step to ensure all tolerances are within factory spec.
I always have to use my electric impact to get it out.
I have an air impact gun that I need to give it a shot with. I have an electric impact stashed around somewhere... but the air one is likely stronger.

Ok, so I get my HLSD from ebay. All seems in order.
The plan was to install in my spare diff and sell the VLSD. I got the VLSD out and the damn thing is shorter than the spare by about 5/8".
Is there a visual way to tell if the diff is for an ABS vs non-ABS car?
Thanks
Epstein
05-12-2008, 05:01 AM
The ABS housings for an S-chassis are 5/8" longer at the snout. This length is to accomodate for the extra sensor that mounts there near the driveshaft. You can usually make an ABS housing work in a non-ABS setup by just pushing the driveshaft into the trans.

I guess I need to quit being lazy and test fit the spare diff before I do anything.
What fluids do you guys use for the S15 HlSD? Redline MT-90?
What do you recommend?
And how many quarts does it take to do a diff change?
Sorry im shooting the questions around..but what do you guys think is the best HLSD write-up floating on the web? for S14..though it should all be the same since they're all R200 diffs
All input is appreciated
Thanks
Use whatever weight the FSM says. I use Redline, but Royal Purple works well too.

80W90 dinosaur juice.
So even though it states on the Redline MT-90 bottle that it is not intended for rear differential use...you guys still use it on your HLSD?
Why is this so? GL-4 is fine in the diff?
You're the only one that mentioned MT-90.
I use the factory recommended viscosity and type of gear oil... manufactured by Redline.
nm i just put Royal Purple in it..GL5
