Looking for taller gears for my car and as part of my S15 diff install. Would like either the 90-96 Q45 3.5 ring and pinion gear or the 97-01 3.7 set. I'll need the 13mm ring gear bolts as well. I might be interested in the complete Q45 diff as well, especially if it's the early 90-96 version.

well I'd think most people on here would only have one of those if they needed it for something but they are easy to track down at the local pick-your-parts usually.

Where are you located, if you are in so cal there are lots of yards i could recommend

I'll trade you my 10 13mm ring gear bolts for your S15 helical 13mm shouldered - 12mm thread bolts.

Can't blame you for trying, but I'll pass on that one. The bolts don't do me any good without a Q45 R&P, while I can use the Nismo ones with the 4.08 as is if I need to.

Everybody is saying don't bother with a final drive that tall. Anybody have any input?

Is there a specific reason you want to go with a final drive that tall? you're certainly going to lose out in acceleration...

What engine do you have? I have a 4.36 in my SR20DET S13 and feel I could maybe go a hair shorter sometimes, but it does seem to fit tracks well now. I would never go longer than the stock 4.08.

After shopping around for a dog ring box, I'm almost considering going to a 3.9 rear end just so I don't have to worry about running out of gear. If I go with a 5 spd dog box, most of them have a 1:1 5th gear- very few overdrive 5th gears in a dog box unless you pay $10k for one.. That means I'd have to size the diff to run out of gear at the end of the straight in my current 4th gear. with my 4.08 rear end, I'm shifting into 5th about 2/3 of the way down the straight at TWS and would definitely run out of gear at TMS with a 4.08..

so I'm halfway thinking about going to a 3.9 with a 4 spd dog box. 1st gear would be good to about 50mph and 2nd would be good to probably 75 mph or so. need to play around with numbers first and see what happens...

anyway for a stock tranny, I'm not sure if I'd go below a 4.08 unless you're trying to make the car dog slow and never get in boost unless you're in gears 1-2-3.

I was thinking of going taller for lower freeway cruise RPM mostly. I do some long freeway commutes sometimes, and thought it would help. I don't mind dropping a gear or two for quick pulls.

But, what you all have said seems to be echoed by everyone else. Those with experience on those gears didn't like them after all. I'm thinking I'll try the stock gears for a while. Thanks for the input guys.

Well i can tell you that with the slightly larger wheel-tire combo on the ZX, the 4.08 stock diff gearing is painfully slow coming out of corners. I am not sure what you are looking for, but I wouldn't go to a taller gear.

Matt, what's that new tranny going to cost you? I'd hold off until the STAC decides what the heck they are doing with ST.

Tristan.. heh.. I have the tranny for you!!! forgot you race a Z32..

I ran across a dog ring Z32 box last night made by Nismo Japan back in the day. It's literally a drop-in Z32 tranny (with TTZ starter location if that makes a difference.. ????) with a dog ring setup. gear ratios were designed for the Z. guy wants $2500 for it.
If that would work in my 240, I'd go for it. I don't think you can run that tranny in ITR, but you could use it in ST or GT2/3 if you wanted to go that way.
Let me know if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with the guy.

as for my tranny searches, I'm trying to do this as "cheap" as possible. i.e. used tranny, flywheel, clutch setup but I'll put a new clutch disc in. I'm trying to find something like a 5 spd dog box, but what I learned last night is that that's just not going to happen for the S-chassis.

The best option is to get a G force T5 dog box and have an adapter plate made for it. the problem is those trannies aren't made anymore so I'd have to buy a used one and hope I can find gears for it in 5 years when I need service.

I almost bought a Saenz TC-840, but after talking to a guy last night, he says there's no way that would fit in the car. the newer boxes have both shafts in the tranny side by side. that makes the tranny much wider than it is tall and it won't fit in the tunnel of an S chassis (he runs an old Bob Leitzinger design S13 in GT2 in the NW area..)

Anyway, based on the stuff he told me, about the only dog box that I can fit in the car will be a T5-based or a vertical shaft layout box.

Pricing.. I don't even want to go there, but let's jsut say it will cost me anywhere from $3500 to $5000 with a used tranny before I'm done.

Yeah, this racing thing gets expensive.

I have someone tearing apart the stock box now to take a look at it. I figure it'll cost close to a grand to rebuild.

That's nothing to what my motor is costing, and I'm JUST doing an IT build on.

yeah.. I'm afraid to know what a balls-out STU build on a KA will run. (think between EP and GT3 specs... eeek).
That's why I'm hoping they allow the SR20DET in STU. I can go a lot faster for a lot cheaper if they allow the SR.

For your sake I hope they do.........but then again, since the rule set is so completely in the air at this point, it could go in any direction.

I've got an auto sr bellhousing (hard to come by) and 280z tailhousing (pullapart) in my collection solely for this purpose :)
