View Full Version : Nat Tours and Nationals
Wondering how many people on here are trying or interested in going to any tours or the Nationals this year.
I am planning on going to the Packwood WA.Tour and possibly the Wendover UT one. Nationals is too far off to decide and it's too far off from North Id.

I would like to but they are just too far away from me. I wish I wouldn't have taken it for granted when it came to milwaukee...

PJ (aceinhole) goes to Nats for SM every year, but he's coming from the East coast.

Wifey and I will do the Dixie National (we live in Georgia) but the rest a way to far away to make sense for our talent level ;)

I've been thinking about going to Peru IN but want to see how the car is. I have some significant changes for next year. Hopefully they will help.

I didn't see that there was one semi-close. Maybe if both of our cars are running good, I'll join you.
Also, off subject, there is a pro solo like two weeks from that in toledo. Same distance and i've always wanted to try doing a pro solo.
I have rich relatives in Atlanta. Maybe I can go that direction one of these days and sponge (I mean visit) them one of these days and do some races down there. I love the accent. Aren't there any western autox'rs around? I have been working on McCoy for a couple of years but so far to no avail.

I autocrossed last year in my 240, but didn't bother with national tour or anything. Bull**** street tires don't get you too far in SM so national tour is a bit overkill for what I wanted to do lol. Josh18_2k on here has a v8 rx7 that he took up though, at least for ProSolo, and maybe national tour though I can't remember.
I went to packwood 3 times, though, one for a 'practice' weekend with NWAA that got us 50+ runs over 3 days :) Way more bang for your buck with that kind of setup!

Ahh, I knew this poke was coming ;). Someday I'll come back... I do miss the good competition, but the HPDE bug hasn't worn off yet. Maybe after I blow a few more motors :o

I think this would be a lot of fun, but something tells me my 9.5" wide wheels and 255 NT01's aren't competitive with hardcore SM competition :)
Locally I have no SM competition to speak of as my car sits today but leaving the state for a Nat Tour event I'm sure I'd have one of he most under-prepared cars in the class.
450/350 spring rates ~ 230whp, not to mention I think technically my car isn't even SM eligible because of the Sil front conversion. I think that would land me in XP, gotta love SCCA rules
The Silvia front is being rethought. I am fairly sure it is legal now as long as you have the bumper support. There are many underprepared cars at the tours. A couple of years ago there was a kid in a honda on street tires. He told me he had brought a spoon to a gun fight. Don Nimi (PDM Racing) was there and he got beat.

Good to know, I'd entertain the idea on V710's over my current NT01's. Besides, it would be a cool experience regardless since I've only seen a handful of national level cars here in FL. Just wish they made a 255, I guess I'll be going with a 245/40/17, 245/45 seems too tall.

The deadline for early entry is 4PM Eastern today! I just signed us up and it's at 254 entries on a limit of 300. Gonna be fun!
You will have a lot of fun. Which class? I'm considering Wendover if I get enough done by then and everything is working well.

The current plan is:
DC ProSolo
Toledo ProSolo
Finger Lakes Tour
Lincoln Pro Finale & Nationals
We may try to squeeze an extra ProSolo in depending on DC and Toledo.
I HIGHLY recommend ProSolos. You get more seat time than a Tour, and the format is way more adrenaline pumping. Nothing like staging at the lights with another car next to you.
Also, if anyone needs some Hoosiers, I've got some 285/30/R18 and 315/30/R18 take-off A6's with life left in them for this season. I actually just sold off 10 285's today and still have a couple stacks left.

I know it is a ways off, but, if anyone is planning on making the trek to SCCA Nationals, I'd be glad to help with directions/hotels/restaurants/whatever. I live in Lincoln so feel free to ask questions.
If anyone is wanting to see more coverage from 2009's Nationals, here are my brother and I's blog entries from the event. Nothing pro quality but just some shots from the event. There are even some shots of our very own AceInHole. :D

We drove over from Savannah, GA to Valdosta for the Dixie Tour today. My wife and I drive in D Street Prepared. Jim Bennett and his co-driver are representin' with his 240sx in X prepared. It was rainy today so we didn't bother with the test-n-tune but we did get to walk the course. I'll report back tomorrow night.

Results for Day 1;

Interesting, Looks like DJ had some coneage.
I always look at SS for the comparison with SM because I race against a fast SS car a lot. SM-112.9/SS-107 Believe there were some very fast SS people there.
The other classes I always look at because they are fast and relate to SM. IMO
SSM-109
XP-106
CSP-112
Weird that SS beat SSM and was very close to XP.
DJ, was weather a factor? How was the course, technical or more towards power? Top speed for you or others if you know?

It was cool both days and overcast all day Sunday but it never rained during the event. My excuse is that I never could catch up with my car and I did have a good bit of coneage. I'm starting to wonder about my vision and I have an eye exam scheduled tomorrow to check it out.
The course flowed nicely and seemed fast but speeds weren't outrageous. I talked to a buddy in SSM with datalogging and his top speeds were in the low 60's. The site is a very long asphalt parking lot with better than average grip for asphalt. Because of the shape, the course was slalom heavy and the transitions required excellent timing (that i couldn't find....,)
SSM had last year's champion running but SS had a lot of talent in some very fast cars and they were really challenging each other during the event. Most of SS was in the 112-114 range but Matthew Braun in the Lotus crushed the field with his times and Paul Barros in a C5 Z06 embarrassed all the C6 Z06's and Porsches.
The top car in DSP was an E46 330 coupe. I don't know what kind of power he had (stock is 235) but he had Moton Clubsport remote reservoir double adjustable coilovers (~$7.5k), 18x11 CCW wheels (~$2.5k) and sticker 315/30/18 Hoosier A6's (~$1.4k) just to get started. His fast run in Saturday included a cone. Without the cone, he could have placed 3rd in SS!
DSP generally runs close to A-stock but there was only one in that class this weekend so it's not a good comparison.

Got my eyes checked today and everything's fine. I guess the problem is with "mental focus" and not visual focus!

Final results have been posted;

Randall Wilcox managed 3rd in XP in Jim Bennett's 240sx. Go Randall!
First place in XP was 13 time national champion John Thomas driving his F-prepared 240z. Second place was 5 time national champion Steve Hoelscher driving his D-prepared MR2.
There was some real talent there. Thanks for the outline.

Good job with the updates Dennis, thanks for taking time to find us as usuall I get to wrapped up,in Randalls defense I did not deliver him a 100 percent car this weekend, too many small distractions with gas pedals, mufflers and new brake systems, seems like Dixie is always a test and tune for us.No excuses though,John and Steve are top of the heap but by the time we get to Lincoln again they will be chasing as it should be for fp and dp.Me on the other hand ,I am not very good but enjoy alot. That rb25det and 2125lbs. is always going to be a handicap in xp,maybe can do something about that over the summer.:)
2125 is pretty low for a 240sx already and then you add in an RB. The XP minimum weight is very low so it does put you at a huge disadvantage. Good Luck
Looks like I will be running Wendover but not in my 240. A good friend needs someone to co-drive his 04 ZO6 in SS. He begged me this weekend and I finally had to give in and drive his 400 hp/tq monster with him. Poor me. I have never driven in a stock class before. Makes me a little nervous. What can I blame things on when I don't kick butt? Oh well, guess I'll just have to suffer in solitude.

You'll make for a good tire warmer :)

Blame it on the car being so much wider and heavier than yours. I bet going from a 4' wide S13 to a 12'wide vette will be fun!
Drove the ZO6 this weekend to practice a bit. I also ran my car on the same course.
I was .2 sec faster in my car and .5 sec slower than the owner. Did better than I thought I would. He can sometimes beat me in my car too. Remind me to never let him drive my car.
ps; There isn't a single SM car entered yet so I would have been running SSM or XP anyway.
I see at least 5 guys that ran in the 09 Nationals signed up in SS for Wendover. I know that some of them are very good. This should be fun. I may get killed but I will still have fun and I'm a good tire warmer for MikeyV.
Wendover is an awesome site. The concrete grip is beyond anything I have experienced. There was some great competition. I had the car owner worried after whipping up on him sat. Must have pissed him off because he took 3rd away from me on sun so I ended up 4th overall.
There were some great cars there. An evo in SSM is tough and an XP E36 was faster than it had any right to be. He blew us away on sunday. I'm sticking to SM. XP guys are developing some fantastic cars.
The 5 people from my club took 2-1st's in CSPL and SSL, a 2nd in CSP, and a 3rd and a 4th in SS. Not too bad.
I watched a fox and her 3 kits play along side the road outside of McCall, Id. Pretty cool.
