Hi fellow NRR members

I'm relatively new to this forum and just thought I would post up some details of my "sleeper s15" which I completed this time last year - some of you will have seen it on FA. Have owned the car since new. I used to track the car when it was lightly modified - have yet to track the car in its current spec. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

The aim of the project was to have a street car that could handle a bit of a thrash on the track - so its nowhere near as hardcore as a lot of the cars on this forum :p.

That is a true sleeper, does the rear end grip? lol

Welcome

Actually it doesn't grip too bad.....but i have stock diff ratio which is 3.69 iirc and have fitted 225 bridgestone RE050's to the stock rims which actually grip better than the RE55 semi's on the street, and a reasonably complient bilstein/eibach coilover arrangement. The standard s15 diff isn't a bad thing either for a stock item and really helps to put the power down - especially out of corners - unless you lift the inside rear - and then it spins.

First gear on the close ratio Nismo box, although taller than stock, is a waste, second, which is also taller than stock, in a roll on situation might start to hook up or spin to around 125klm's/hr depending on ambient temp and road surface. Third gear (from 125klm's) pretty much hooks up.

What bore did you end up going with on the motor?

Your car reminds me of the S15s I kept seeing around Australia in early '04 that caused me to get the S chassis bug again. I almost got an S14 Kouki around '00-'01, but the gutless KA caused me to change my mind(ended up getting an E36 M3), but got into tracking and the sight of all the nice S15s in Australia and New Zealand, then the few modded S13s/S14s/S15s in Japan were enough to make an S chassis something I had to have when I got back to the States.

Def, it's got an 87mm bore.

Yes the s15's are a nice package....a local magazine awarded the s15 as performance car of the year in 2001......not that it shone out in any particular area but because it was a decent all round package for the money.

The s chassis eventual popularity is evident through the huge aftermarket parts support for these cars.

Jug,

Welcome. What times you doing at Barbagello?
Who tuned the car?

juggernaut
01-15-2010, 05:44 AM
Jungle .....I haven't tracked the car in its current spec....but hopefully its better than the 70/71 seconds I used to get with a pod, CES twin dump and exhaust, and Re55 on stock rims around the long track.

Glenn "Lumpy" Campbell tuned the car.....whom I saw also had some involvement in your car judging by your intro thread. The tune needs a little tidy up but never bothered as changing the compressor at the moment.

What did you think of Lumpy's tuning?

Def, it's got an 87mm bore.

.

Any reason you didn't go with something bigger like an 88 or 90mm bore with the sleeves?

If I had to rebuild my engine I'd have to think about possibly doing a big bump up on the bore to get a broader powerband.

juggernaut

No real reason Def....I was also going to put a tomei stroker crank in it too but everything was going to take longer again.....the car had already been off the road for 18 months and my patience was beginning to wane.

2.35 litre SR would be great.....then again so would an RB or the simplicity of an LS2. However, as you know the little SR in an S chassis car = great handling.

All in all I doubt I have the driving prowess to fully exploit the current setup anyway.

Ah nice. I'm sure it'll destroy the previous time!

I thought Lumpy was awesome in every aspect, he and i have used to catch up when Slide FX came to QR drift round, although obviously he isn't doing that anymore. I used to keep in contract via the slidefx email. Do you have his number or know how i can contact him?

Nice car! I'm jealous of the places that get the S15 chassis. It seems like enough of a step up from the S14 in terms of overall polish that you could drive one daily and not feel like you're in an old crappy car. S15 and R32 are the two cars I really wish we had gotten in the states, although any S chassis with an SR stock would have been nice.

Latest Update:

My previous setup copped the following upgrades:

3076 52 trim (replaced the 3071 56 trim);
Extrude honed exhaust housing;
3.5 inch C-Red custom dump and custom CES exhaust (replaced 3 inch ex)
Tial MVR wastegates smaller (replaced Tial 44 wastegates)
100 cpi cat with 5 inch body 3.5 inch in and out;
Gate dump merged back into exhaust just before the cat (previously merged just before it went under the car);
BP98 retune by Sean at Allstargarage.

Unfortunately I don't have back to back dyno's on the same dyno as the retune was done by a different tuner.

Will post up the boost graph when received.

Initial driving impressions - this feels more responsive than the previous 3071 setup. Peak hp is now achieved earlier at around 6350 rpm.

I suspect the boost control is a little wonky judging by the torque and hp graphs..which will need to be sorted

Hi Jungle.

More bugs to iron out.....Hypertune intake plenum split open.....for the second time. Sent it back to Hypertune this time to get fixed once and for all ....hopefully.

Funny think is it didn't notice it....I just happend to put my hand on the plenum when it was idling and could feel my fingers being sucked underneath the plenum. The crack is where the IACV boss is welded onto the plenum underneath. On this occassion the crack appeared on the edge of the weld.

Might just run it on the dyno once I get it back just to make sure AFR's are OK.

Equinox

Pretty poor effort. What was the root cause last time?

juggernaut
10-21-2010, 08:01 PM
Cracked in similar place.....i.e. around the IACV boss the first time it was run on a dyno - so you could hardly say it was from fatigue.

Speaking with Hypertune on the issue - possibly might need to run a remote IACV.

jungle
10-29-2010, 05:58 PM
Bugger about the plenum. Sounds a bit strange, is it a weak point in the plenum? I can't imagine it'd be poor welding??

juggernaut
11-02-2010, 11:10 PM
Just thought I'd mention, Hypertune are exchanging my old plenum and giving me a new plenum. Their new plenum setup runs a remote IACV

Should have it next week.

Whilst this is nothing new - thought I'd post a few pics of my 3.5 inch exhaust whislt I was at it.

Cat and cat back system was from CES racing in QLD. Amazing how it fits given they didn't even have the car!!

All other fab work from turbo dump to cat and actual fitting of the whole system was done by Josh at C-Red.

All of the system from the ex manifold, ex hsg and exhaust system up to the cat has been ceramic coated.

Pictures speak for themselves.

What other braces do you guys have? (As oppose to an S14)

juggernaut
04-03-2011, 04:17 PM
Not sure what bracing s14's have - but there is a decent sized brace in the boot (is that "trunk" in US speak :p) - runs alongs along the back of the car just above the boot floor.

Yep, I think there also some at the base of the rear shock towers/rear seat area.

also one that ties the 2 rear subframe mounts together
