Tomorrow I am picking up my new set of wheels, 16x8 +10 all around, for my S13. I have been pondering tire choices for a while and would appreciate any thoughts/ suggestions. I am thinking something like a 215/45/16 or 225/50/16. I would like to fit the widest tire with as little pull/ roll as possible.

You should have ought better sizing for Max wheel fitment...
You can squeeze an 8.5+35 w/ 255's on the front w/ a roll and minimal roll if any
8.5+20 w/ 224/40

8+10 sticks out 3mm More than the 8.5 + 20

I know I could have, but I really wanted the particular wheels.

well thats an 8.5+20 w/ ~ 1* of camber (It's a daily) w/ 225's so maybe 2.5* of camber, Roll & Slight Pull should be able to fit 255's under there...

I've run 16x8 wheels for some time now and a 225 is nice and square.
The problem is that no one makes decent sized tires in 16". Everything is 205 - 215 50 series or 255 1980's Corvette monsters.
I've been running Hankook RS2s in 225/45/16 and they've worked well (usually peak lateral G's of just over 1.0) but they are not making them anymore.
225 is too narrow for competition/lapping day use and I've wished for more grip every time. I recommend putting the widest and lowest profile tire you can get on there (with a UTQG of 200 or less with lower being better and more fun for AutoX and track work) and make it work.

I Run 235/40's right now Provides enough grip for a Bolt-On KA. I'm running 235 Rear and 215 Front's.
The rears held up ok, but it sucked due to the cheap crappy tires but I'm sure w/ Quality tires you can get decent grip with 235's A.A.

the TTZ's stock tire sizes are 245/45/60 on 16x8.5" in rear and 225/50/16 on 16x7.5" in front. might take a look at what you can find in those sizes as well.

All other things aside, what are your thoughts on diameter differences? Compared to the stock 205/60/15, the 225/45/16 diameter is 2.88% shorter and the 225/50/16 diameter is 0.69% taller. Will either of these make a noticeable difference?

i had that size for a little while and didn't really like it. i went with some 225/50/16 falken 615s and liked them a lot more.

What was it that made you like the one size over the other?

Sidewall Flew perhaps?
also the 225/45 will move your 60mph Cruise ~100rpm up

they were different tires (the first set were RS2s) so i can't compare the difference in sizes directly but the smaller tires spun easily and the shorter effective gearing was annoying.
I'd definitely go with the shorter geared tire, especially on a <250 rwhp setup.
I have stock gears and 255/40-17's and feel that they're just a hair too long with about 350 rwhp. At 300 rwhp they feel too long, but not worth it to get a 4.36 in there at this point IMO.
