I'm bombing along I-5 headed towards Southern Oregon at 8 am Wednesday morning (after leaving at 4am), to go raft the Rogue River.

Just past Roseburg/Winston a doe decides to jump into the freeway right in front of the minivan next to me. The doe barely clears the minivan just to jump into my lane, which caused me to unpreventably hit it.

I had to rent a U-Haul which took about 5 hrs when it was all said and done, and load my trailer into the back of it. (by hand no less)

After it was all said and done, here's the carnage.

It'll require replacing the core support, fender, radiator, a/c condensor, bumper, grille, headlight, headlight housing...that's what I've found so far anyway.

You take it home for dinner?
I'd have at least eaten the damn thing!!

Sucks to hear, man.. My parents were in California (2000miles f/ home) on a road trip about 10 yrs ago and they creamed a good size buck. it shattered the front windshield, bent the A pillar, and broke all the side windows out of their Caravan.
They had to leave the van behind, rent a car for the rest of their trip, then fly home. 6 wks later when the van was fixed, insurance flew them back to CA to inspect the car.. dealership suddenly found a safety recall on the ABS module so they wouldn't let them leave with it (again).. insurance flew them back home and the Chrysler paid to truck the van back to them after the ABS recall was done.

Sucks to have to load the trailer in the truck, but at least you got it all home!

I called ODFW (Fish and Wildlife) and told them to come pick it up. Off a doe that size, you are likely to only get about 15-20 lbs of meat, and due to the trauma the meat needs to be cared for very quickly.

They typically have butchers that will do it for free, if the food is going to a food bank (or similar)

I still wound up going rafting, but almost managed to get the 10 ton U-Haul and trail stuck in loose gravel. DOH. A trip to the junkyard, and a nice bill...it'll be good as new.=)

Wow...

I almost hit three animals last night on the way home from my meet. One of them was a deer, one was some little furry thing, and one was a dog just sitting in the road. I guess it had heartworms or something and was trying to commit hari-kari. I wish I would have been in the 240 because all I could do was blow my horn in the S2000 since the dog was right in front of a house. In the 240, I would have did a second gear burnout on the rev limiter, open dump style, for a few seconds to wake those ****s up so they can come get their dog out of the road.

A few times on some back roads I've encountered, drunks and idiots.

The drunks were stammering around on the road. The idiots were talking on a relatively busy back road, walking against traffic, wearing dark clothing.

Luckily I wasn't hauling ass back there, but there are plenty of people who do.

I have everything on hold at a junkyard, but no time to go get them.

That is what has slowed me down. A couple of close calls and I finally decided that my life is going to be hampered by morons, and it isn't worth killing someone or going to jail over. So I stick close to the speed limit, and do a few scouting runs on turns before I corner at the limit.

YUP. Hitting someone would be horrible; let alone all the trouble you'd be facing. On the right back roads getting up to triple digit speeds isn't hard to do. Just not worth all the risks.

Back to topic... Sucks about the deer. I hit one 3 years ago in my Nissan. Luckily the worst I had was paint was messed up, headlight broke (just the lens luckily) and I blew a fuse on the front parking lamps. Poor deer lost 3 legs. :(

sorry to hear that veilside, can't believe it damaged the core support!!

some of the posts in this thread = LOL. and to add, earlier this year, a giant ass raccoon jumped in front of my 240 and i apparently punted it into the next where another car hit it. f-er destroyed my s14's license plate mount and cracked my brand new OEM bumper... ugh..

hahaha.. I forgot to mention my raccoon incident.

Imagine this:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p292/nissanfanatic240/28JUN08CarWash009.jpg

At 80mph passing another car on a two lane road. Now, as I came up next to the car I was passing on my way to dinner, I see a little critter run out in the road. I guess in the midst of crossing the road, he did some calculations in his head and decided that the best method to avoid large bright lights was to go back and forth in the road. I thought it best to maintain course in case the guy next to me slammed on his brakes and tried to turn, which is the normal reaction of normal drivers. So, I guess we both maintained course and the raccoon picked my bumper. So I heard a thud and envisioned this:

done to the raccoon, samurai style from the shoulder to the lower torso. I drove a few miles to the next gas station, and all I see is his head poking out from under my intercooler. I was already dressed nicely, so I decided to just go home and pick up my Subaru. On the way home, I treated the raccoon to a 1g cornering session along with a couple 100mph pulls to honor his death. He eventually made it to the raccoon afterlife.

more OT...
I was doing some test driving for a company at Texas World Speedway several years ago.. We were taking turns in 3 hrs shifts driving some test cars 48 hrs stright.. my turn was around 3am and of course everyone was pretty out of it by then...
I came around the back straight and I thought I saw something funny at the end of my headlight range, so I get on the radio.. "uhhhh, any of you other guys see anything out there, or am I just delirious?"
.........
So I come around the next lap and they're there again. wTF? about 5-6-10 fuzzy yellow dots in the road.. almost like fireflies, but they get out of the way before I drive through. dubbya tee efff?

I come back around next lap and stick my brights on them when I see them again. COONS!! There were about 6 racoons running around on the track and they'd get out of the way when I was about 200ft away and just sit at the side of the track and watch.

they eventually disappeared..
Then came back about 30 min later. there was a trail of garbage across the track where they'd cleaned out the trash dumpster and were trying to drag it home, but a car had come by and they dropped the booty to get off the track..

So I do about 10 more laps and they're all just sitting on the outside concrete wall of the oval watching us drive around. sweet! racoons are race fans!
